How to Practice Gratitude

More than ever, mental health is important, as is recognizing all the blessings we're given. Practicing gratitude can improve your mental health, strengthen your relationships, and increase your quality of life. Few things are cost-free with so many benefits. But how do you get started? We have some tips to get you started on the path to gratitude.

Be present

The best first step is improving your mindfulness and being present in the moment. It's difficult to find things you're grateful for if you're not living in the moment. Once you're focused more on living in the moment, you'll be able to more easily recognize the things in your life that you're grateful for.

Start small

Start by spending a few minutes a day thinking about the things that you're grateful for. You could say them out loud, write them down, or just spend a few minutes thinking about those things, and what your life might look like without those things.

Acts of kindness

When you find yourself particularly grateful for something in your life, you might be moved to act on those feelings. On days when you feel grateful for food, consider volunteering at a soup kitchen. If you're grateful for loved ones, try visiting someone who doesn't have any family, or do something nice for a stranger. Doing nice things for others can help you remember how blessed you are.

Keep a journal

For those who want to reflect on the things they're grateful for, a gratitude journal is an excellent idea. A gratitude journal can be especially helpful when you're feeling unhappy or you're having some bad luck. The act of physically writing down your gratitude can solidify it within your mind, too.

Express your gratitude

If you feel gratitude towards a specific person, or something they've done, tell them! Expressing gratitude for others can strengthen your bond and improve your relationship, and it can help you recognize ways you can positively impact others.
