BMW Partners With Nissan to Expand Network of EVgo DC Fast Charging Plug-in Stations
Electric car owners will now have 174 additional spots to recharge around the country
BMW and Nissan are teaming up with EVgo, the largest public DC Fast charging network in the U.S., adding 174 charging locations in 33 states. That makes a total of 668 dual-port DC Fast charging stations currently with 50 additional stations planned for 2017. The move is further proof of BMW’s commitment to supporting DC Fast charging stations as demand grows for more conveniently located stations that will allow EV drivers to travel even further.
Faster, more convenient charging
The new stations can accommodate the BMW i3 and any brand equipped with a quick-charge port. Each location offers a dual 50 kW DC fast-charging station capable of charging an EV up to 80 percent in about 25 to 30 minutes. That’s significantly faster than the level 2 charger currently available at most public charging stations. With driver convenience in mind, most of these new charging stations are located near restaurants and shopping centers, making charging easier and more accessible. The addition of the new locations means that 90 percent of BMW i3 owners now have easy access to a nearby station.
The award-winning BMW i3
BMW’s first all-electric car, the i3 is available with a 33kWh lithium-ion battery that can travel up to 114 miles on a single charge. It has made quite an impression in the EV category since its introduction in 2013. The BMW i3 has been honored as World Green Car, World Car Design of the Year, as well as Green Car Journal Green Car of the Year and Yahoo Auto’s Green Car. The 170-horse power electric motor, a standout in its own right, was included in the list of WardsAuto’s 10 Best Engines.
“BMW’s continuing collaborations with Nissan and EVgo further demonstrate the company’s commitment to building a robust public charging infrastructure across the country," said Robert Healey, Head of EV Infrastructure for BMW of North America. "We recognized early on that meaningful partnerships like this would be essential in order to support the expansion of convenient and accessible electric vehicle charging options. The expansion of the plug-in vehicle charging infrastructure will give more U.S. drivers the confidence to choose an electric vehicle, such as the BMW i3, as longer distance EV travel becomes increasingly commonplace.”
