2020 BMW 5 Series
Overview
Starting at $53,900,* the BMW 5 Series sedan is positioned in the middle of the automaker's sedan lineup, above the 3 Series but below the flagship 7 Series. From a price standpoint, it’s slotted between the 4 Series and the more expensive 6 Series Gran Coupe and Convertible. In other words, it’s the Goldilocks of BMW models—not too large or small, and just the right price for a luxury midsize sedan.
The Perfect Ride for...
Drivers looking for the next generation of ultimate driving. The 2020 5 Series also offers both plug-in hybrid and high-performance models (described below). Add agile handling, a large 10.2-inch touchscreen, a diverse lineup of powertrain options, and a number of driver-assistance and semi-autonomous features, and you get a BMW that delivers on every front.
Drive & Handling
BMW offers four different powertrain options on the new 5 Series. All engine options are backed by an eight-speed automatic. The 530i, 530e, and 540i all feature rear-wheel drive as standard with available xDrive all-wheel drive. The M550i is all-wheel drive only.
The entry-level 530i is powered a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four engine that delivers 248 hp and an EPA-estimated 28 mpg combined on the rear-wheel drive model.**
The 530e iPerformance plug-in models are powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four which produces 180 horsepower and 255 lb-feet of torque, paired with an electric motor that cranks out 111 horsepower and 265 lb-feet of torque. Rear-wheel-drive models are rated at 69 MPGe combined while xDrive models get 65 MPGe combined.**
A 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six engine powers the 540i producing up to 335 horsepower and 331 lb-feet of torque. It delivers an EPA-rated 22/30 mpg city/highway with rear-wheel drive.**
Finally, the M550i features a 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8, capable of cranking out an impressive 523 hp and 553 lb-ft of torque. You'll be able to enjoy that power and still get decent gas mileage with 20 mpg combined for rear-wheel drive models.
For those looking to take advantage of the ultimate driving experience, BMW offers the available Dynamic Handling Package on the M550i with Integral Active Steering. At lower speeds, the system increases steering speed, and at higher speeds, decreases it. The package also includes an Active Stabilization system and adaptive suspension to deliver a beautiful balance of comfort and handling.
Key Features
Top-of-the-Line Active Safety Features
Not only did the new 5 Series receive a five-star rating from the NHTSA, but it also earned an IIHS TOP SAFETY PICK+ in its first year, thanks to a host of available driver-assistance and safety features, including Frontal Collision Warning with City Collision Mitigation. These options are included as part of the available Parking Assistant Plus Package, which also includes Parking Assistant Plus, a surround-view camera system, blind-spot warning, daytime pedestrian protection, lane departure warning, and rear cross-traffic alert.
iDrive 6.0
The 2020 model features iDrive 6.0, an intuitive system that delivers the latest infotainment features to drivers and responds to natural speech patterns via advanced voice-recognition technology. Quite literally, your wish is its command. With optional Gesture Control, simply moving your hands triggers navigation, communication, and entertainment controls, ensuring you can keep your attention on what matters: the road ahead.
Alternative Options
In addition to the BMW 5 Series, the brand boasts a number of other options to meet different price points and driving needs. BMW's latest SUV redesign, the X3, is a great option for drivers looking for a mid-size SUV. Capable of going pretty much anywhere, the X3 combines impressive performance with comfort; it's the pinnacle of luxury. The BMW 4 Series offers a smaller, more price-conscious alternative. This entry-level, compact sedan rides similarly to the 5 Series, but its smaller frame lends it an even sportier feel.
