2017 BMW 5 Series

Updated: 2/10/17

New for 2017

The 5 Series gets a complete redesign for 2017.

A Luxury Sedan Reinvented

For its seventh-generation 5 Series sedan, BMW went all out. The 5 Series was redesigned from the ground up with an emphasis on both efficiency and performance, as well as a heavy dose of technology. The 5 Series features driver aids so sophisticated that it can almost drive itself. (Almost.)

Performance

The 2017 BMW 5 Series makes the most of its clean sheet design. In addition to the new platform, the 5 Series features a new family of engines engineered for exceptional performance.

The BMW 530i is powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine which produces 248 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. The 540i sports a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six with 335 hp and 332 lb-ft of torque. All 5 Series models feature eight-speed automatic transmissions and come with standard rear-wheel drive or optional xDrive all-wheel drive.

With rear-wheel drive, the 530i does 0 to 60 mph in 6.0 seconds, while all-wheel drive models do the job in 5.8 seconds. The 540i does 0 to 60 mph in 4.9 seconds with rear-wheel drive, and 4.7 seconds with all-wheel drive. Both versions are electronically limited to 130 mph, but the optional M Sport package raises the limit to 155 mph.

The 5 Series also features some notable new driving tech. Active grille shutters close when additional cooling air is not needed to improve aerodynamics. A navigation-assisted shift strategy—similar to technology used in Rolls-Royce models—uses the navigation system to read topography and adapt transmission behavior accordingly. Optional Dynamic Damper Control adaptive suspension also adds electromechanical anti-roll stabilization, which uses electric motors to combat body roll.

Features

The 2017 BMW 5 Series is a four-door, five-seat midsize luxury sedan. Like any BMW, the 2017 5 Series is truly luxurious. Highlights on the 530i include LED accent lights and fog lights, power-folding and auto-dimming heated mirrors, and 16-way power front sport seats with adjustable side bolsters and driver memory. The 5 Series also comes standard with the latest version of BMW’s iDrive infotainment system, with the gesture control feature introduced on the company’s 7 Series flagship sedan.

Other available technology features include 20-way ventilated and massaging front seats, a head-up display, LED interior ambient lighting, wireless phone charging, Apple CarPlay®, Amazon Alexa integration, and a built-in WiFi hotspot. Audiophiles will appreciate the available 16-speaker Bowers & Wilkins audio system with diamond tweeters, while parents will appreciate the optional rear-seat entertainment system, which features a pair of 10.2-inch screens and DVD/Blu-Ray player.

Buyers can choose from 13 colors and four alloy wheel designs, in 18-inch, 19-inch, and 20-inch sizes.

Design

The 2017 BMW 5 Series adapts the crisp, modern design language of the larger 7 Series sedan, which was redesigned for the 2016 model year. It marks the return to BMW’s traditional practice of creating a strong family resemblance between its sedans.

The new 5 Series is slightly larger than the outgoing model, specifically: 1.2 inches longer, 0.3 inches wider, and 0.6 inches taller. Its wheelbase is also 0.2 inches longer, at 117.1 inches. At the front, the familiar BMW face of the twin-kidney grille and round individual headlight lenses gets an update, with headlight housings that actually blend into the grille and standard LED adaptive lighting.

The side view is that of a classic rear-wheel drive sports sedan. The passenger cabin is pushed toward the back, and the front and rear overhangs are nice and short. BMW’s signature “Hofmeister Kink” is also present to finish off the side glass. BMW also integrated “Air Curtains” that pull air across the front wheels and through vents ahead of the doors to reduce turbulence.

The interior blends sporty elements like bolstered front seats with tech items like a standard 10.25-inch display screen. As part of the redesign, the 5 Series also got a larger trunk, with 18.7 cubic feet of space. It also features a 40/20/40 split-folding rear bench seat for added flexibility.

Safety

The 2017 BMW 5 Series includes typical safety features like anti-lock brakes, stability and traction controls, and airbags, but it is also offered with a host of high-tech driver-assistance systems. That includes adaptive cruise control that operates between speeds of 19 and 130 mph, active lane-departure warning, evasive steering assist, Active Lane Keeping Assist and Traffic Jam Assist with semi-automated steering, remote-control parking, and a 3D Surround View camera system. In the event that all of those systems can’t prevent a crash, Active Protection anticipates crashes and automatically triggers certain occupant protection measures.

Verdict

The 2017 BMW 5 Series is a smarter and more advanced luxury sports sedan.
